The Finnish metal band was started in the year 1990 by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari and Esa Holopainen. It was under Relapse Records that Amorphis got their first breakthrough with their death metal debut album ‘The Karelian Isthmus’. Later an EP titled the ‘Privilege of Evil’ was released by Amorphis under the same label.

The year 1994 saw the release of the band’s second album titled ‘Tales from the Thousand Lakes’. Their third album named ‘Elegy’ was released in the year 1996. The band experienced several line-up changes over the years where various experiments were done for better results. The music of their albums like ‘Am Universum’, ‘Far from the Sun’, ‘Eclipse’, ‘Silent Waters’, ‘Skyforger’ and ‘The Beginning of Times’ helped them to earn worldwide recognition.

Amorphis is also known for using Kalevala, which happens to be the Epic poem of Finland, frequently for writing lyrics of their songs. Several other Finnish mythologies like Kanteletar were often used by the band Amorphis as adaptations.
